The Ultimate Workcation from Paris: What to See, Do, and Eat
Last month, I had the opportunity to travel to Paris for four days to visit our French Business Unit. Beyond my work hours, I aimed to make the most of my time in the city and experience the new culture. I was fortunate to be accompanied by a colleague who used to live in Paris and acted as my tour guide. Here are a few tips I recommend if you're traveling to Paris for a workcation:
1. Run to the Canal St. Martin
Our office is in the up-and-coming 10th Arrondissement, just a few minutes from the iconic Gare de l'Est train station and twenty minutes from the bohemian Canal Saint-Martin. If you're a runner and staying in this area, this is a great destination to get some fresh air and explore the neighborhood. If you're looking to increase your kilometers, the Parc des Buttes is right around the corner and is beautiful in spring.
2. Eat a Croissant Everyday
The croissants in France are amazing, and I highly recommend trying one every day. There were a couple of Patisseries next to our office, so almost every morning, our day began with a Bonjour, a strong cup of coffee, and a "un croissant, s'il vous plaît." The butter, the taste, the melt-in-your-mouth goodness - I am missing them! So please, if you're traveling to Paris or anywhere in France, buy the croissant. Even if you think you're not hungry, buy one anyway.
3. See the City at Night
Paris is beautiful, but its true beauty comes alive at night. Everything is lit up, and you can see the old historic buildings completely illuminated. It's stunning and makes for some amazing night photography opportunities. One of the most magical moments was seeing the Eiffel Tower sparkle as the clock hit 8:00 - it goes off every hour on the hour. I felt quite safe walking around at night, but of course, you should always be on your guard, stay where there are people, and keep your belongings close to your body.
4. Try New Cuisines
Trying local cuisine is one of the best ways to explore new cultures and understand the people. Skip the french fries (actually Pomme Frittes); go for something you've never had. On the first evening in the city, I visited this cute French restaurant La Maison Bleue and tried several new dishes. The first was our appetizer, Foie gras. This was an orange-looking pate that spread easily on toasted bread. "Just try it," my colleague said before telling me it was a fatty duck liver. But no matter how strange that sounds, it was delicious! That night I also tried Octopus for the first time and really enjoyed it.
5. Buy the Damn Beret
When in Paris, being fashionable is key. Pack your most stylish outfits, and don't forget to wear a beret as well. It's a fun accessory that adds to the Parisian atmosphere. I was lucky enough that my colleague Laura packed an extra beret along in her suitcase for me. We even did a few photoshoots on the streets and had so much fun!
I hope these tips help inspire you, whether you are traveling to Paris for work or vacation! This city offers so much and I’m already looking forward to visiting again. I can see this city being an amazing place for a girl’s trip! 💖
